Spring Clean Your IT: A 60-Minute Checklist for Adelaide Businesses
September in Adelaide means longer days, footy finals, and — hear us out — the ideal moment for an IT spring clean. None of these seven checks needs a technician. One quiet hour is enough.
The 60-minute checklist
1. Updates (10 min): check for pending Windows or macOS updates on your own machine and restart it. If yours has been nagging for weeks, your team's have too.
2. Passwords (10 min): change the passwords on your email, banking and accounting logins — the three that hurt most if compromised. Long phrases beat complicated gibberish.
3. Multi-factor authentication (5 min): open your email account's security settings and confirm MFA is on. Then check your accounting software. Two minutes each, enormous protection.
4. Backups (10 min): find your last backup and — this is the important part — restore one file from it. A backup you've never restored from is a hope, not a plan.
5. Old accounts (10 min): list everyone who has left the business this year. Do they still have logins? Former-staff access is one of the most common gaps we find.
6. Shared drives (10 min): is client data sitting in personal desktops or someone's Downloads folder? Move it to the shared, backed-up location.
7. The paper trail (5 min): could you rebuild your IT from scratch if you had to? If the passwords and setup notes live in one person's head, write them down — securely.
