Adelaide Storm Season Is Coming: Is Your Business IT Ready for a Blackout?
Every summer, it's the same story for Adelaide businesses: a storm front rolls through, suburbs lose power for minutes or hours, and on Monday morning servers won't start, the internet's dead and tills won't open. Almost all of it is preventable with an hour of preparation — before the first warning, not after.
What actually breaks in a blackout
It's rarely the obvious thing. Power comes back on and the lights work, but the server in the corner didn't shut down cleanly and now a drive is corrupted. The NBN modem and switch rebooted into a weird state. The VoIP phones are dead because the router is. The EFTPOS terminal can't reach the bank. None of these need a technician on site within minutes — they need the right cheap hardware and settings in place beforehand.
The $200 part that saves you
A small UPS (uninterruptible power supply — essentially a smart battery) on your comms gear and any on-site server does two jobs: it rides through the two-minute flickers that would otherwise hard-crash everything, and it can trigger a clean, automatic shutdown if the outage drags on. For most small offices, one or two units covering the modem, switch and server is enough. This is the single highest-value storm purchase a small business can make.
Power is only half the problem — the NBN goes down too
Even with power protected, storms take out NBN nodes and lines. If your business runs on cloud email, cloud files or a cloud POS, a 4G/5G failover connection keeps you trading while competitors wait for a crew. Many business-grade routers switch over automatically; your team notices nothing.
Let the cloud take the risk for you
Files and email in Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace don't care that your office is dark — staff can keep working from home or a laptop on a hotspot. An on-premises server in a blacked-out office is a very expensive paperweight. If you've been putting off moving off that old server, storm season is a good argument.
After the storm: the surge problem
The outage rarely kills equipment — the surge when power returns does. Surge-protected power boards (or a UPS, which has this built in) on anything expensive are cheap insurance, and far cheaper than a fried server.
Your one-hour checklist
- UPS on the modem, switch and any server — with automatic shutdown configured.
- 4G/5G failover on your internet connection, tested by actually pulling the NBN plug.
- Critical files and email in the cloud, reachable from anywhere.
- Surge protection on tills, PCs and network gear.
- Backups that run off-site or to the cloud, and a restore you've actually tested.
